Iowa +10
Michigan -10

College basketball bets don't get much simpler than moneyline — just pick which team will win straight up. Essentially, it's a 50-50 shot. However, the payout is rarely 50-50. Typically, bookies set one team as the betting favorite and the other as an underdog.

In this example if you want Iowa you will bet $11 to win $10 (or any denomination thereof). If Iowa beats the Wolverines or loses by less than 10 points your bet will cash. The only way you will lose is if Iowa loses by more than 10 points.

By taking Michigan you are only going to collect if they beat Iowa by more than 10 points. A win by less than 10 points means you lose.

If Michigan wins by exactly 10 points then you push. The amount you bet is returned back to you.

Money Lines

Money lines are straight forward wagers on who is going to take the game straight up. You don’t have to worry about a point spread. The sportsbook manages risk by using a number that tells you how much you have to risk to collect $100 in winnings. For favorites a minus (-) sign is used to tell the gambler how much he has to put at stake to profit $100. The underdogs get a plus (+) sign to signal how much a bettor can cash in on a $100 wager. Let’s take a look at another example.

Iowa +250
Michigan -270

In this example when you think Michigan will beat the Hawks you have to gamble $270 to win $100. A $100 bet on Iowa would get you $250. The more likely the favorite is to be victorious, the higher the numbers will be. If two evenly matched squads are facing off both money lines will be close to -110.

Totals (Over/Unders)

Do you think two teams are going to play a high or low scoring game? If so then gambling on the total might be your best option. The sportsbook releases a number and you have a chance to wager on whether you think the total points scored by both teams will go over or under that number. For example if the total is 144.5 any bet on the “over” will cash if 145 points or more are scored in the game. If both teams add up to 144 or less, “under” wagers cash.

Parlays

You might have heard the term “parlay” before and what this refers to is a combination of bets (sides and totals). Each one of the wagers has to win for you to cash in on your parlay. To win a spread bet, we need to beat the expectations set by the spread. In our example, the expectation for California is to win by 14.5 points. Therefore, if California wins by 15 points, we win our bet. If California wins by 14 points, we lose our bet. This example illustrates the key differentiator for a spread bet: Your team can win the game, and you can still lose your bet.

Conversely, the expectation for Prairie View is to lose by 14.5 points. If they lose by 15 points, you lose your bet. However, if they lose by only 14 points, you win your bet. Here, your team may lose the game, and you still win your bet since they beat the spread.

How To Bet On College Basketball Games

Let’s say there is an overwhelming number of bets for California, and the bet is no longer balanced. The bookmaker might move the line to -15.5 for Cal and +15.5 for Prairie View. In doing so, California now needs to perform even better for the bet to win, while Prairie View can now do even worse and still win. This encourages people to bet on Prairie View while discouraging further bets on Cal.

In this case, we’d win $800 plus our original bet for a total payout of $900. As you can see, there’s significantly more profitable. This variance is due to the varied risk. The risk of betting on Prairie View is much, much higher than betting on Cal, but you get handsomely rewarded if you hit.

Maybe you would rather just bet on the whole game rather than on a specific team. In that case, perhaps over/under bets are for you. These are bets on the total points scored in the entire game rather than a bet on either team. Using our previous example, here is how it works.

In the middle row, there are two numbers designated with an “O” and a “U.” These numbers refer to the threshold of points at which an over bet wins against an under bet. While these do line up with different teams visually, that does not impact the bet. Just because the “O” is on the Prairie View line, that does not mean the over bet only applies to that team. You are merely betting how many total points will be scored.

You win an over/under bet by correctly picking where the point total for the game will end. This means points scored by both teams, not just one.Here, we can see that the over/under is 143.5. If we place an over bet, a point total of 144 will win. Conversely, if the point total were 143, we would lose an over but would have won an under bet.
