Betting the Kentucky Derby
Why is the Kentucky Derby such a great wagering opportunity? Beyond being a major event and the biggest 3-year-old race in the world, the Derby is stacked with a 20-horse field. So a big betting pool with a lot of uniform money is bet on the Kentucky Derby.
Now while the favorites have won the last six runnings of the Run for the Roses, those favorites have paid out pretty well between $6.60 and $12.80 on a $2 win wager. But it’s the chance for a big exacta, trifecta or superfecta score that brings out more bettors for the Derby.
2019 Kentucky Derby Odds Wynn Wild Card
When favorite Always Dreaming won in 2017, a $2 exacta with Lookin’ At Lee (33-1) returned $336.20. A $1 trifecta with Battle of Midway (40-1) in 3rd returned $8,297.20. And a $1 superfecta with Classic Empire (6-1) in 4th paid $75,974.50.
So, a big score is possible in the Derby, and most recreational bettors will miss the potential midrange or long shots with some value and potential to hit the board.

These three horses will take the most wagering action and one of them will go off as the Kentucky Derby favorite:
- Roadster: First place in Santa Anita Derby

While we wait for the Derby draw, final workouts and track condition, some early indications are that a horse at midrange odds like Tacitus is clearly capable of winning the 2019 Kentucky Derby.
Longshots like Spinoff or Maximum Security can’t be ruled out on the win or Top 3 finish, while By My Standards is another potential underneath type horse that would provide a big payoff even if the projected favorite Roadster were to continue improvement and run well to win.
Mike Smith, who road Justify to a Kentucky Derby victory and Triple Crown achievement, has elected to ride Omaha Beach instead of Roadster.
Bettors beware.
A sign that both have taken on money since the Wynn Las Vegas race book opened early 2019 Kentucky Derby odds, Roadster and Instagrand are now co-15-1 favorites. Yes, with more than eight months until the first Saturday in May...
Johnny Avello, the Wynn's executive director of race and sports book, confirmed the drop in price from starting odds back on Aug. 3 of 25-1 for Roadster and 30-1 for Instagrand.
Roadster hasn't run back since his first start, but it was an impressive one as the Bob Baffert-trained son of Quality Road sat behind horses before circling the leaders. In the irons was jockey Mike Smith -- not known to ride debut runners -- and the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity on Sept. 3 is next.
Instagrand, a son of Into Mischief, backed up his flashy unveiling with another 10-length win over the weekend in Del Mar's Best Pal Stakes (G2). He did it going wire to wire, with trainer Jerry Hollendorfer saying the Futurity is likely next for this colt, too.

Should either of those win the Futurity, they'd likely appear as the lone favorite when Avello opens wagering on a much longer list of 2-year-olds the second week of September.
Saratoga's Grade 1 Hopeful Stakes, also on Sept. 3, will determine the East Coast's top early Derby choice. The race is expected to include flashy maiden winners Nitrous (Steve Asmussen) and Mucho (Bill Mott), while Sombeyay, the Todd Pletcher-trained winner of the Grade 3 Sanford Stakes should also appear.
